The correct number of patients suffering Parkinson's desease in Belgium is not known. The statistical data on Belgium are the extrapolation of the data in The Netherlands.

An international epidemiological study is needed to come to a more accurate assesment of the situation. This is important because we need a better insight on the number of individual patients, but also on how many paramedics are involved an on the impact this has on our society. A staggering 30.000 patients suffering Parkinson's desease is the current prognosis. The diagnosis is also surfacing more and more with younger people.

As the population in Western countries is aging fast, it is predicted that more and more people will suffer from a neurological condition. From these deseases with elderly people, Parkinson's desease is the most diagnosed, right after Alzheimer's desease.

Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a neuro-degenerative illness; a malfunction in the connection between the brain and the muscles.

The disease is caused when certain neural cells that produce the neurotransmitter "dopamine" are dying off in great numbers, causing an acute shortage of dopamine.
